Derevyanchenko with Astana Arlans Kazakhstan

26-year-old Ukrainian Sergiy Derevyanchenko is one of the most technically gifted fighters in the whole WSB, yet to taste defeat in his two seasons in the competition, and his signing for Astana Arlans Kazakhstan is sure to beef up an already extremely impressive team.

The orthodox Derevyanchenko was one of the mainstays for the victorious Milano Thunder last season and he is sure to bring the house down when he steps into the ring for his new team. Hugely accomplished and with such a repertoire of shots in his arsenal, he is the one of the most feared Middleweights in WSB.We put a few questions forward to the new Arlans star.

Had you received offers from other Franchises?
There had been some tentative enquiries but nothing really concrete until the Arlans came in with a firm offer. From there on it was an easy decision to make. I remember boxing Kanat Slam last season and the atmosphere was incredible, I got a great reception from the supporters out in Astana. That was for me one of the fixtures that stood out, the whole set up of the Astana Arlans Kazakhstan is fantastic and I could not be happier to join a team of such high standard. People here are always very friendly and have always made me feel welcome. I remember defeating Slam and I still had lots of fans wanting autographs and pictures, it was fantastic and is one of the factors that contributed to me not hesitating in signing here.

You won the WSB Team Final with Milan last season, why not stay with them?
One of the great barriers for me with Milan was the language. In Europe, it is difficult for me to communicate so when the Arlans came in with the offer, I jumped at the chance. Dynamo Moscow had enquired about my availability and Ukraine are building up a team for this season and had originally wanted me in their team too but knowing Astana Arlans Kazakhstan, the choice was easy.

Do you think the Arlans can win the WSB Season III?
They reached a final and semi-final in two seasons, they have the ability to beat any team. The season will be extremely tough but I see a team more than capable of winning the WSB Team Trophy. The boxers work hard, we have good and experienced coaches so we should be successful come the end of the season. Watching Ruslan Myrsatayev and Yerzhan Mussafirov up close, they are exceptional boxers, with these guys in the team; we will be major contenders for the title of Champions.

Tell us about your personal ambition for this season.
As you know, I have won the Individual Championships twice and have a 13-0 record that I wish to defend. But for me the most important is the team, to win as a unit, my aim is to contribute towards that.

Is there anything you would like to tell the Astana Arlans Kazakhstan fans?
I just want them to know that I am delighted to join up with such an exciting team. I will give my all for the Arlans in order to win. I am there for victory. I will also ensure that the fans are entertained when I am boxing.
