One of the shinning lights of the WSB's first season was the
lightning quick Algerian Abdelhafid Benchabla as his explosive
style won him many fans along with the title of best Light
Heavyweight fighter. A star was born when he showed true class and
real spirit to take the Individual Championship belt and ensure the
No.1 spot at the top of the ranking for season one.
His battle in the final against the Frenchman Ludovic Groghue
was an epic contest that showcased why WSB is such an enthralling
competition. Following his transfer to the impressive Astana Arlans
Franchise, Benchabla has grown even more as a boxer and once again
will look to take the title. He is however now a marked man with a
reputation and a major scalp for all his rivals to take. Here we
get to know more about the sensation that is Benchabla.
You have a huge fan base, how does it feel to be one of
the stars of WSB?
I am very glad that people like me and that the result of all my
hard work brings joy not only to me but to the supporters of my
team and all boxing fans.
Does being the Individual Champion carry any extra
responsibility?
I feel the responsibility of the champion in everything I do,
when I train and even when I rest, when I eat, and every time I
train and focus on my health.
New team, the Astana Arlans, how has the move been so
far?
My transition has been very special; I was warmly welcomed by
the whole staff and all the other boxers. I immediately not only
felt part of a team but felt like I had found a new family.
The team has started the season strongly, what is the
set-up like?
The set-up is excellent, they have thought of everything. I just
need to concentrate on winning and the team does the rest.
Groguhe then Charnabayeu, it has not been an easy start,
tell us about these fights?
With regard to Groguhe, it turned out that my shoes were
slippery so I had no grip on the canvas. The referee did not take
this into account and I feel this was the main reason for my loss.
The Charnabayeu fight was a different proposition, he fought well
but does not yet have the skills to threaten so winning was not too
difficult.
There are some strong fighters out there, who has caught
your eye?
I am not interested in anyone except a certain Frenchman
who fights for Milano. I only have eyes for him and look forward to
locking horns again and this time setting the record straight.
How is preparation going?
Training is going well, in the morning we run and in the
afternoon there is intensive sparring and some rigorous general
training
Defending your WSB belt, the Olympics, 2012 is a big
year for you
I know it is a big year, one of the most important in my life.
Work, work and work even harder, that is the only thing to do. And
never ignore the advice of trainers.
What motivates you?
I came from a family of boxers and I just want to make them
proud by winning. I also hope to inspire others to take up the
sport of boxing; it is a real passion of mine, setting an example
and motivating others to done gloves and take part in one of the
purest of disciplines.
What is your motto?
My motto is to trust in God and always move forward.
