For the first time in Season V of the World Series of Boxing (WSB) defending champions Cuba Domadores were pushed strongly in a Group A fixture, but they soaked up the pressure to prevail and win 3-2 over Ukraine Otamans in Kiev.
The result is the seventh successive win for Cuba, who maintain their dominance in the group ahead of second placed Ukraine.
Hasanboy Dusmatov opened the action at Light flyweight (49 kg) with a win for the Ukrainian Franchise, as he earned his fourth victory of the season against Cuba’s 2-2 Joahnys Oscar Argilagos Perez on points.
Bantamweight (56 kg) Domadore Andy Cruz Gomez evened up the scoring with a solid win over Omurbek Malabekov.
Cuba edged in front on the night after fight number three, when the 4-0 Light welterweight (64 kg) Yasniel Toledo edged a close split decision verdict against 0-2 Volodymyr Matviichuk.
The Ukrainian Franchise evened up the scoring at Middleweight as Uzbek star Hurshidbek Normatov showcased his incredible boxing skills to submit Arlen Lopez to his first defeat of the campaign.
With everything to play for heading into the last fight, Cuba’s Erislandy Savon earned his 12th successive WSB win and the overall victory for Cuba with another supreme performance against Siarhei Karneyeu.
Cuba Domadores travel away next week to Morocco Atlas Lions, while Ukraine Otamans meet Mexico Guerreros.
