Caciques Venezuela produce the shock of the season so far as they destroy Azerbaijan Baku Fires

Week two of Season V of the World Series of Boxing has produced many upsets, but none as startling or surprising as Caciques Venezuela defeating Season IV runners-up Azerbaijan Baku Fires 4-1 in just their second WSB match.

The result is even more shocking considering Venezuela were coming off a 5-0 defeat in their opening match, while Azerbaijan were full of confidence after dominating Italia Thunder 4-1.

Estadio Polideportivo José María Vargas, Maiquetía was the venue, and the home crowd were treated to an opening win, as Venezuelan Flyweight (52 kg) and London 2012 Olympian Eduard Johan Bermúdez Salas outperformed Azerbaijan’s Elvin Mamishzada on all three scorecards.

The Baku Fires recovered well in the second fight to level up the contest, as Lightweight (60 kg) Albert Selimov won every round against Nestor Armas.

Caciques Welterweight (69 kg) Gabriel Maestre Perez reached the quarter-finals of the London 2012 Olympic Games, but achieved perhaps the greatest accomplishment of his boxing career in the third fight, when he won by three rounds against Yauheni Ramashkevich, and gave Venezuela the lead back in the match.

Albert Ramon Ramirez Duran was fairly unknown at Light heavyweight (81 kg) prior to this clash, but the South American delighted the watching crowd as he secured a momentous, and crucial victory for his Franchise, winning by split decision against Soltan Migitinov.

Duran won the last round on two scorecards, which ultimately gave him the victory, and he proved he can handle the pressure not just of himself, but of his nation.

With the night already a winning one for Caciques Venezuela, the upsets kept coming as veteran Edgar Ramon Munoz Mata sensationally stopped Azerbaijan’s Arslanbek Makhmudov, the number one ranked Super heavyweight (91+ kg) in WSB last season.

Very few pundits had anticipated Venezuela winning even one fight against one of the most decorated Franchises in WSB history, but this result has proved the class of the South American team, and they will take a lot of confidence from this phenomenal night in Maiquetía.

Caciques Venezuela travel away to USA Knockouts in week three, while Azerbaijan Baku Fires will want to recover quickly from this defeat at home to Astana Arlans Kazakhstan.
