The newly-formed World Series of Boxing (WSB) Cuba Franchise was officially introduced to media on Wednesday August 21 at the National Sport Center and Development (CNAR) of Mexico City.
Ten boxers, accompanied by their coaches Rolando Acebal and Raul Hernandez, participated in a training session and presented the official uniform they will wear on the occasion of the WSB Exhibition Match against the Mexico Guerreros.
Light Flyweight (49kg) Yosbany Veitía said “Being a part of Domadores team is very important to me and I feel well prepared to fight under pro boxing rules for the first time. I am not interested in the non-AIBA pro ranks; the AIBA World Championships and the Olympic Games in Rio are my only goals”. When asked about how his team feels before the big match, he stated: “The team doesn’t feel any pressure, even being considered as the favorite. We will do what we always do, we will box to win”.
2012 Olympic Bantamweight (56kg) Bronze Medalist Lazaro Alvarez said “We are very well prepared for this match and I am confident that competing over 5-rounds will not be a problem for us. During our regular training we box more than 3-rounds so we are well used to the extra physical effort it takes.”
During the training session, the Cubans had a 5-rounds sparring session with boxers from the Mexican National squad who soon will be competing in the AMBC Elite Continental Boxing Championships in Santiago (Chile).
The Domadores will carry on training at the CNAR to put the final touch to their preparation. The training will end up next Wednesday August 28, a few hours prior to the official weigh-in at the Monument to the Revolution.
The Mexico Guerreros and the Cuba Domadores will meet in a WSB Exhibition Match on August 29 and 30 at the Juan la Berrera Gym of Mexico City. The match will feature some of the biggest names in the boxing world.
