Cuba officially joins WSB

World Series of Boxing (WSB) is delighted to announce that it has now signed a Franchise agreement with Cuba which marks the official entering of the Island in the competition as of Season IV.

“I am extremely happy to finish this intensive week of discussions and work with this very symbolic moment”, stated Alberto Puig de la Barca, President of the Cuban Boxing Federation. “I can feel a lot of respect between us, a lot of transparency, and I am convinced that this is just the beginning of a fruitful working relationship and friendship. We are thrilled to enter this great competition and we are already preparing ourselves with a lot of enthusiasm.

“We will not target the Team Finals next season but our goal will be to gain experience and offer a great opposition every time that we travel the world. We are convinced that this competition will help our boxers in becoming even better and preparing the World Championships, Continental Championships and obviously the Rio 2016 Olympic Games in the best possible conditions”.

The boxers’ squad will comprise the 30 best talents of Cuba, including Flyweight (52kg) Pan American, Youth Olympic and Olympic Champion Robeisy Ramírez Carrazana, Bantamweight (56kg) Pan American, World Champion and Olympic bronze medallist Lázaro Álvarez Estrada, Light Welterweight (64kg) Pan American, World and Olympic Champion Roniel Iglesias Sotolongo and Light Heavyweight (81kg) Pan American and World Champion Julio César la Cruz Peraza. More names will be announced in the coming weeks.

“Cuba has always been one of the best – if not the best – boxing country in the world and it really is with huge pride that we welcome your Franchise in WSB”, stated Karim Bouzidi, WSB Chief Executive Officer. “On behalf of Dr Ching-Ku Wu, AIBA President and WSB Board Chairman, I want to express our gratitude to the National Sports Authorities of Cuba who have demonstrated a great support to our competition programs since we first visited the Island a few months ago.

“We are excited to witness the Cuban Franchise and boxers competing in WSB next season. We appreciate the massive step it represents not only for boxing but for all sports in Cuba. AIBA is looking forward to working even closer with you in the future to develop all activities in your country”.
